<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"> <p>this paper examines two main concepts in the diagnosis of personality disorders: categorical and dimensional. It presents historical aspects of the study of personality disorders, describes the characteristics of the normative level of personality functioning, pathological personality traits, and an understanding of the nature of personality disorders. A critical review of the literature has been con-ducted, and the main theoretical postulates of the categorical approach to the diagnosis of personality disorders within various classifications have been de-scribed. (DSM-5, ICD-10, etc.) are presented, the clinical heterogeneity of the manifestations of various personality disorders is shown, and the shortcomings of the categorical approach are pointed out. The necessity of transitioning to a dimensional approach in the diagnosis and study of clinical manifestations of personality disorders is justified.</p> </trans-abstract> <kwd-group xml:lang="ru"> <kwd>диагностические критерии</kwd> <kwd>категориальная и дименсиональная концепция расстройств личности</kwd> <kwd>уровень функционирования личности</kwd> <kwd>патологические черты личности</kwd> <kwd>МКБ-11</kwd> <kwd>DSM-5</kwd> <kwd>категориальная диагностика расстройств личности</kwd> <kwd>критический обзор</kwd> </kwd-group> <kwd-group xml:lang="en"> <kwd>diagnostic criteria</kwd> <kwd>DSM-5</kwd> <kwd>categorical and dimensional concept of personality disorders</kwd> <kwd>level of personality functioning</kwd> <kwd>pathological personality traits</kwd> <kwd>ICD-11</kwd> <kwd>categorical diagnosis of personality disorders</kwd> <kwd>critical review</kwd> </kwd-group> </book-part-meta> </book-part> </front> <back> <ref-list> <title>References</title> <ref id="ref1"> <label>1</label> <citation-alternatives> <mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Murray H.A.
