This article raises the question of the need for scientific research in the process of teaching restoration of tempera painting(icons).Scientific research in restoration includes x-rays, infrared imaging, ultraviolet imaging, micro pits and chemical analysis of soil and paint layer. Students need to learn how to conduct scientific research of a work, be able to correctly describe the results obtained and, on the basis of this, to compile a methodology for the restoration of this object
