the article is devoted to the study of the emergence of the concept of «symbol» in Russian culture of the XVIII century. The idea of introducing symbols into the culture, allowed not only the extollment of the secular over the religious, but also the strengthening of the right to power. Appealing to the book «Symbols and Emblemata» allows us to consider the ideas of Peter the First in the framework of cultural discourse.
