This paper examines two main concepts in the diagnosis of personality disorders: categorical and dimensional. It presents historical aspects of the study of personality disorders, describes the characteristics of the normative level of personality functioning, pathological personality traits, and an understanding of the nature of personality disorders. A critical review of the literature has been con-ducted, and the main theoretical postulates of the categorical approach to the diagnosis of personality disorders within various classifications have been de-scribed. (DSM-5, ICD-10, etc.) are presented, the clinical heterogeneity of the manifestations of various personality disorders is shown, and the shortcomings of the categorical approach are pointed out. The necessity of transitioning to a dimensional approach in the diagnosis and study of clinical manifestations of personality disorders is justified.

Hervey Cleckley is one of the most influential psychiatrists of the 20th century. Part of his scientific research still causes debates in the scientific world, especially his works about «successful psychopaths» and the curability of psychopathy.
