Abstract: the article discusses the history of the term “serial murder”, the author describes the criteria for serial murders, analyzing the work of domestic scientists in this direction... The term "serial murders" in Russia appeared in 1991. This concept is quite often found in official documents of law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation. There are no clear definitions of serial and mass crimes in national legislation, and there is no consensus in criminology on their interpretation. The main characteristics of these social phenomena are usually taken from foreign studies, in particular, the works of American criminologists.
