the article presents the history of second foreign language teaching from the point of views presented by philosophers and educators dating back to Ancient Egypt and the beginning of the 20th century. The overviewed philosophical and educational ideas have been applied in the modern context of the activity, communicative and ethnocultural approaches to second foreign language teaching.
