In education, pragmatism is an approach to learning and teaching that focuses on keeping things practical. Its key theorist is John Dewey. It has four principles: Unity, Interest, Experience, and Integration. Proponents of this approach among teachers, use active project-based learning and problem- based strategies in the classroom and focus on topics relevant to students’ lives. This paper starts by shedding light on Join Dewey’s educational philosophy and its implication on Engineering education. It further discusses how the basic principles of pragmatism can be applied in learning thereby making the process of teaching-learning more effective in the Additional and Upskilling courses we achitectured at the Institute of Contemporary Educational Technologies of the Bauman Moscow State University.

«Artistic means of expressiveness used in dialogues to describe colloquial speech in the works of Bernhard Schlink»

This article deals with the problem of describing the dialogical speech within the framework of the work of Bernhard Schlink, attention is paid to the linguistic elements used to transmit communicative acts and to the authors' goals aimed at the realization of creative intent. The purpose of the work is to consider the features of the transmission of live, real speech in the works of Bernhard Schlink. The work is of a survey nature. It provides examples of the author's use of phonetic, lexical and syntactic elements of the language, which contribute to the creation of a real dialogical speech between the characters. It was revealed that the description of communal acts in the works of Bernhard Schlink is characterized by a tendency to a strong emotional impact on the reader, the use of means of various linguistic levels responds to the author's desire to differentiate the text of the work in a stylistic way. From the lexical point of view Schlink resorts to the use of various kinds of colloquial elements of the language or units of low style, here are used phraseological units, modal particles, interjections, etc. From the syntactic side, the author uses incomplete sentences, free word order and etc. In the phonetic plan, the author shortens words, deafens them, as this happens during a real communicative act. The use of colloquial elements in the works allows the author to diversify the text stylistically and makes it more interesting for the reader, which is confirmed by the fact that Bernhard Schlink belongs to the most popular German writers of the day.

«Implicit theories of a person and dialog integrity as a social formation»

The article is devoted to the analysis of the role and significance of the image of a person, in a form of implicit theories to form the integrity of a dialogue as a social formation, to the analysis of a dialogue as a part of the social situation that presupposes setting various objects and tasks, to the analysis of the verbal integrity of a discourse in the light of the speaker’s conception of a person, i.e. proceeding from his implicit theories of a person that emerge in his ordinary consciousness. The organization of a dialogic discourse is directly connected with implicit theories of a person, which in their turn are a complex of the speaker’s images associated with his interlocutor. The unity and diversity of communicative senses dictate the verbal choice corresponding to the conceptions and images of interlocutors. Within the limits of the common informational field «I» and «you» of interlocutors enter into irreconcilable contradictions, at the same time the two-way character of speech intercourse within the limits of language communication is another factor of the social integrity of a dialogue, the variety of communicative senses is unified by informational, social, conceptual fields. The article analyzes literary examples and extracts from pre-election debates in USA both in Russian and in English.
